It was a story and nothing more. Only a short story, not bad but not exciting either. Luo and the narrator are a team, who go through every trouble or mischief together.

This book is not yet featured on Listopia. A perfectly enjoyable read until the end, which left a bitter taste in my mouth and ultimately soured the entire reading experience for me. Near the end there was a sudden shift of perspectives — most of the tale had narrated by Ma, but suddenly there was a section by Lou, the seamstress, and a random village person, for no discernable reason.

It fits in well with the revelation, from “The History of Surrealism”, that many surrealists such as Dali transitioned into full-fledged fascists.

They try to be sneaky and smuggle banned books. Some decisions made by Dai Sijie in the writing of this book was rather strange, imo. This was a delightful little story, but suffered greatly from lack of character development.

I forced myself to finish this in order to learn how to commit to things. This novel has all the ingredients to be a charming love story, but fails to deliver when it matters most. I’m not sure what i was expecting from this book, but i was disappointed by what i got. I could not connect or sympathize completely with the characters, and in that the story was ruined for me.

There is not even enough information for readers to fill in the gaps on their own. It seemed to me that the author wanted to shame readers for feeling surprised at the books’ influence on the Little Seamstress’s decisions, which if that WAS his intent is stupid because our surprise is not a function of any moral blindness on our parts, it’s a function of the characters’ blindness – as if the author chose this perspective for us and then wants us to feel guilty for sharing their ignorance.

He also wrote and directed an adaptation of Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress, released in The title is a play on “le complexe d’Oedipe”, or “the Oedipus complex”. It says National Bestseller on the front, and I have to wonder how that happened.

Still, focusing on the little love story piccoa, there’s something that really bothers me. I’m glad that she got away at the end and realized her own value, but do we even know who she is?
