But it’s unclear whether true chemistry or simple boredom causes the two of them to start an illicit affair. Since I generally view life in this sort of semi-cynical way, I found a lot to identify with in this book. When Ronald McGorvey, convicted sex offender moves into the neighborhood the residents are angry. This was the one I was able to sell. Todd’s marriage to his gorgeous wife Kathy, a documentary filmmaker, is floundering.

Kathy later finds out about Todd’s affair with the rather plain Sarah, and finds herself more insulted than angry that Todd would go for someone less attractive. I only had sympathy for her. Personally, I don’t know that the sex-offender subplot did much for the story and I could’ve done without it, particularly considering its overall “preachy” tone which may be unavoidable when writing about so delicate a subject.

Little Children is a novel by American author Tom Perrotta that interweaves the darkly comedic stories of seven main characters, all of whom live in the same suburban Boston neighborhood during the middle of a hot summer. Anyhow back to the book. So it may seem like a simple story but there is a lot going on in the background to bring the people together by the end of the book. His appearance sets the already nervous parents into hyper-overprotection overdrive. It got good reviews by both critics and viewers.

He still has some of the same problems as in his earlier novels the random addition of a secondary or tertiary character’s perspective for just one brief segment, for convenience in the plot, is as annoying here as it is in Electionbut I felt like was making a story more than the sum of its parts. Especially retired cop Larry. This isn’t a happy novel. Yes, this is a satire but not a laugh out loud one for me.

And Ronnie’s great adversary, Larry, is also very unpleasantly flawed. Lovers of realistic fiction.

All reverting back to childhood with their desires tmo deeds. Perhaps it is also because I grew-up in the area where this fictional town exists, North of Boston, that I felt uneasy with the text.

Some of the characters were just perfect in their unlike-ability.
