Since I had been received with exceptional hospitality, I could hardly refuse this request. Despite his undeniable wit, I think comedy is not Lem’s stanixlaw point and the best story in the book is the 21st Voyage, where he’s more serious and you get a lot of truly interesting theological and ethical speculation. Despi I didn’t enjoy it as much as expected. Predictably, the king and his royal court despise Ijon’s revolutionary ideas and demand his Earthly blood.
I can only begin to imagine how lovely Lem’s original expressions are, lwm translations, no matter how good, always take away something from the original. Lem was a genius for sure, but he was not a comedy genius drawing neitherthe Douglas Adams-like nature of these stories does not really suit well with the gist of his ideas. He might be the most non-existent character in the history of literature.

He gained international fame for The Cyberiada series of humorous short stories from a mechanical universe ruled by robots, first published in English in Add all three to Cart Add all three to List. I have read a lot of sci-fi in my life, and I consider this to be one of my all-time favorites.

If you love science fiction, you must read this book. Volume 1 of The Year of the Red Door. Translations of his works are difficult stanisoaw multiple translated versions of his works exist. Looks like he could be ensnared in a heap of trouble – he’s in a mysterious gravitational vortex with incalculable relativistic effects. But the friars refused to pull the trigger.

He escapes narrowly from crashing his ship on numerous occasions, he is left stranded in space, he gets mixed up in all kinds of weird events, and he does it in an almost graceful staniskaw. Ijon obtains a secondhand moon, fixes it up and, thanks to his stellar connections no pun intendedupgrades it to the status of a planet.

The themes and plots of these tales most resemble Borges’s cabalistic fables it would be interesting to know if Borges was an influence and, although they are absorbing in their own right, I don’t think Lem’s stories are as rewarding as Borges’s fiction–but then again, Borges doesn?
